Teaching Statement

In my capacity as an educator, I provide a supportive, patient, and collaborative environment in addition to my high energy teaching style. My main objective is for students to leave having a better awareness of the capabilities of their bodies. I provide opportunities for students to develop and express their own agency and power in the classroom because I believe every student has a voice. I accomplish this by encouraging goal-setting, utilizing inclusive language, embracing my students' interests, and supporting their exploration of movement. Through my teaching, I motivate my students to push the boundaries of their potential by simply believing in them. Through continuous reflection, students in my classes develop technical skills, as well as intrapersonal intelligence and critical thinking skills. My goal is to provide students opportunities to make connections between their experiences in dance class with other elements of their lives. I work hard in class while keeping in mind the joy of creating and dancing, rekindling the excitement that I have for movement in both myself and my students. Observing my students' flames of discovery ignites my own interest and excitement for the art of dance every time I teach. I am able to contribute to a learning lineage by teaching and passing on the skills I have learned from my mentors and my own experiences in a supportive yet rigorous learning environment. That being said, I believe it is my duty to provide my students with safe, supportive, stimulating, and creative environments in which they can explore their interests as students, individuals, and aspiring dancers.

“Dynamic Motion”

In this workshop, students will explore the fundamentals of contemporary and modern dance. We investigate the spine's fluid mobility, contraction and release, spirals, falling, and weight-based counterbalancing. In addition, improvisational methods are introduced, enabling students to experiment with movement. Students will perform phrases and improvise across the floor, as well as learn a phrase that combines elements of jazz and hip hop with modern dance. So grab your water bottle, shoes to turn in, and clothes that will allow you to freely move! I look forward to seeing you in class!
